We hope you will join us at the special education workshops and conferences we offer for parents, professionals and community members in schools and communities within Broome-Tioga, Delaware-Chenango-Madison-Otsego, Greater Southern Tier and Otsego-Northern Catskill BOCES Districts.

Workshops on the following topics are currently available:
Parent Member Representative Training: A training prepared and tested by the New York State Education Department for all current and prospective parents of children with special needs who are interested in becoming parent representatives to the Committee on Special Educaion. Parent Members are an essential part of the CSE meeting. The role of the parent member is to help keep the parent’s prospective at the forefront of the CSE meeting.
Kid-in-a-Book: A hands-on workshop where participants will be guided through the process of organizing the health and education paperwork of a child with special needs.
Understanding Procedural Safeguards: Why is it important to your child’s education?
Positive Parental Involvement: How to actively participate in your child’s school community and how and why it can make an impact on his/her education.
Transitions:CPSE to CSE – Explore the change from pre-school to school-age special education. Learn about the changes in services and how this will affect your child.
Transitions: CSE to post-high school – What happens after high school? Exploring the options for the future.
Creating an Effective IEP: What is a “good” IEP? Learn about measurable goals, testing and what questions to ask to improve your child’s Individualized Education Plan.
Building an Effective Team I: Understanding the special education process and specific roles in special education. Learn strategies to develop and maintain a positive relationship between parent and the school community.
Building an Effective Team II: Learn new skills to be an advocate for your child. Develop strategies on team and consensus building so the needs of the child are addressed. Learn more about the mediation and resolution process.
Disability Specific Workshops: Request a workshop on a topic not listed or a specific disability.
